Before our masters begin the winemaking process, each vintage starts with what Mother Nature gives us. Mumm Napa sources grapes from the cool southern Carneros region and along the Napa River headed north towards Yountville. Each of the areas lends a different characteristic to the wine. Carneros Chardonnay is lush and tropical, while mid valley Pinot Noir has bright berry concentration. Our long-term relationships with top growers ensure that excellent grapes are continually available.
One of our primary sources of high-quality fruit comes from Devaux Ranch, situated in the Carneros growing region. The vineyard possesses some of the finest, most ancient soils, including the first limestone outcropping found in the area. Limestone is a major component of the soil in France’s Champagne district, creating depth and richness.
Traditionally, grapes used in sparkling wine, such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, are picked at a lower sugar level, or degree brix. The grapes retain the crisp acidity allowing for power, finesse and balance.
Mumm Napa combines technological innovation with traditional care in the vineyard. To preserve quality, our grapes are handpicked and placed into small, molded plastic containers, affectionately known as "Famous Yellow Boxes." Their simple, clever construction keeps the berries from being crushed and arrving at the winery in prime condition for the presses.
In Summer 2002, Ludovic Dervin was named Winemaker at Mumm Napa. Ludo brings to the position extensive experience in both sparkling and still wine production, along with an exceptional working relationship with V.P. Winemaking and Operations Napa Valley, Rob McNeill.
Boasting a thorough understanding of méthode champenoise production, Dervin completed his winemaking studies in his native Champagne, France, His skills were then refined during several harvests with the prestigious Champagne houses Charles Heidseick and G.H. Mumm, as well as California's Piper Sonoma, where he first worked with Rob McNeill. Prior to joining Mumm Napa, Ludo polished his non-bubbly winemaking skills at the world-renowned Russian River wineries, Hartford Court and Gary Farrell.
“Making sparkling wine from the Napa Valley gives me the opportunity to be creative with the outstanding fruit grown here. My goal is to make a sparkling wine that shows elegance, balance, and artistry. It's the ideal way to celebrate life each day!”
